Sometimes a move must be postponed. The next step you take really depends on why the move date had to change. For instance, in areas like Maple Grove or Plymouth, that postponement could easily be caused by a sudden spring snowstorm.

Check With Your Saint Paul Movers

Minneapolis residential moving companies are used to being flexible around storms. The company you choose should be able to tell you what your options will be if your move must be postponed.

If your belongings are already packed and must be moved out of a former residence, ask if they offer storage and what the charges would be. This allows you to move out of the old place and stay in temporary accommodations until whatever postponed your move is out of the picture.
If you aren’t packed yet, make sure you can stay where you are and reschedule the move date with your movers. Other details that should be taken care of are sometimes forgotten:

  • Utilities – both extending those where you are and postponing hookups
  • Deliveries – new stuff coming to the new place may need to be rescheduled
  • Change of address – do what you must to keep getting your mail
  • Talk to your insurance agent about coverage changes
  • Take Advantage of the Pause in Your Schedule

This is a great chance to visit the old friends you are leaving behind. It’s also a great time to go over your plans and make sure you are ready once you can make the move. Do you need a new sofa? If so now might be the time to go shopping. Are you familiar with what is available in your new neighborhood? Do an internet search. Make the decluttering actually happen now instead of later – bring only the things that are most precious to you.

A postponed move is not a bad thing at all. If you have to reschedule because of a late spring ice storm and your possessions are all packed up because you must clear out of your old place, take a mini-vacation at one of the many Minneapolis area hotels and rest up. You’ll be working hard to unpack and get settled in soon.
